WHAT IS CONFERENCE INTERPRETING?
The International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) defines interpreting as the practice of conveying the meaning of a speaker’s message orally and in another language to listeners who would not otherwise understand. It is typically carried out at multilingual meetings between representatives of national governments, international organisations or non-governmental organisations. There are two main types of conferences interpreting: simultaneous and consecutive.
SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETING
This technique is performed live, in a sound-insulated booth, where the interpretation is delivered in real-time, while the speaker is giving the speech. This format is most commonly used in plenary sessions of the European Parliament or in international conferences.
CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING
Interpretation is rendered after the speaker has finished or during pauses that the speaker makes, from notes taken by the interpreter during the speech. This kind of interpretation is suitable for press conferences or small meetings.
